Race for Hypersonic missile technology is on for the global powers
On 1st September it was announced that U.S. Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have completed the captive carry tests of two hypersonic weapon variants. It is also expected that first free-flight tests will be carried out later this year
Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are known to develop the design of scramjet-powered hypersonic missiles as part of the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) program run by the Air Force and DARPA. Separate air vehicle designs have been tested by both the companies and an speed of more than 5 Mach was achieved during the trials.
Successful completion of captive carry tests makes US air force one step closer to fielding their hypersonic missiles.
Both the companies are confident in the their design and wind tunnel testing has provided the testing team with an result which was anticipated by the research and development team.
Apart from US India and Japan are also developing their own hypersonic weapons. Russia and China have already claimed to have successfully developed an hypersonic missile.
