Fire on USS Bonhomme Richard caused extensive damage says US Navy chief 



The cause of the fire is still unknown but Navy officials believe that the fire had broken out in the cargo hold of the ship.
About 160 sailors were on the ship at the time of fire and around 38 sailors and 23 civilians suffered minor injuries. The hard work of the sailors and other people involved in extinguishing the fire helped in preventing the fire from spreading to fuel supply of the ship.

22 year old US amphibious ship named USS Bonhomme Richard has extensive structural, electrical and mechanical damage. 
US Navy chief said after observing the ship and studying about the incident that the fate of the ship is uncertain and extensive damage has been caused to the ship.

If the ship cannot be repaired then it would take around 4 billion US dollars to 
replace it with a new one according to defense analyst.
The amphibious ships under certain conditions can act as an mini aircraft carrier.
It is now know that the USS Bonhomme Richard was undergoing an upgrade costing around 250 million dollars. 

Also the up-gradation was going on for about 2 years and the ship was about to complete it's up-gradation process.
The US Navy is investigating the incident and taking a closer look on to what was the reason which caused the major fire on the navy ship.
